Responsible for developing and delivering policy that will contribute to world-class research in the UK and the conversion of science into wealth through innovation, including:

  • Working across government to encourage innovation through government procurement
  • Science and innovation network across 24 countries, aiming to share scientific expertise, resources and facilities through international scientific collaboration
  • Sponsorship of Foresight programme of futures research to help identify potential risks and opportunities
  • Delivering and developing the recommendations in the Sainsbury Report and the Innovation Nation White Paper; proposals designed to encourage more innovation in business and public services
  • Relationships with the Research Councils
  • Enhancing the profile and take up of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects at university level and beyond
  • Science and Society; encouraging the public to appreciate science and its relevance to their lives

Responsibility for:

  • Technology Strategy Board; a business-focused organisation dedicated to promoting technology-enabled innovation across the UK
  • British National Space Centre; leads UK efforts to explore and benefit from space
  • National Weights and Measures Laboratory; advice on the enforcement of weights and measures legislation - units of measurement
  • Design Council; helping businesses become more successful, public services more efficient and designers more effective
  • National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts (NESTA); an independent body with a mission to make the UK more innovative
  • Energy Technologies Institute; bringing together projects that create affordable, reliable, clean energy for heat, power and transport
  • Commission for Environmental Markets and Economic Performance; advising Government on how the UK could make the most of the potential economic benefits of the transition to a low carbon, sustainable economy
  • BSI (British Standards Institution); working with manufacturing and service industries, businesses, governments and consumers to facilitate the production of British, European and international standards
  • UKAS (United Kingdom Accreditation Service); the sole national accreditation body recognised by government to assess organisations that provide certification, testing, inspection and calibration services
