Abolition of the Slave Trade

The Royal Navy's role in suppressing the Slave Trade

Synopsis

This lesson aims to inform students about the campaign for the Abolition of Slave Trade in Britain and the role which the Royal Navy played in actively suppressing the trade.

The lesson places particular emphasis on the role played by certain British political and naval figures. It should also provoke a debate about the importance of the right to personal freedom and invites an examination of the Royal Navy's current role in controlling people trafficking. The lesson would work well in conjunction with the Freedom and Justice lesson.
