Role of the Royal Navy in the Abolition of Slavery
Synopsis
This lesson looks at the transatlantic Slave Trade, which took place between the continents of Europe, Africa and America from the 17th-19th centuries. The lesson focuses on the origins of the trade, the treatment of enslaved Africans and the 'trade triangle'. It is advised that this lesson is delivered in advance of 'Abolition of Slavery - role of the Royal Navy', which investigates the role of the Royal Navy in the abolition of the Slave Trade.

Learning Outcomes
Lower ability students will:- Have a basic understanding of the background to the Slave Trade and the conditions endured by enslaved Africans.
- Understand what is meant by the 'triangle' of the Slave Trade and identify key countries involved in this trade. Describe the route of the trade triangle.
- Have a basic understanding that historical texts may not be factually accurate.
- Be able to identify what we can learn from sources and what they cannot tell us.
- Recognise that people's attitudes towards slavery changed over time.
- Understand the background to the Slave Trade and have an understanding of the type of conditions endured by the enslaved Africans.
- Understand what is meant by the 'triangle' of the Slave Trade and identify key countries involved in this trade. To also be able to describe and give some explanation for the trade triangle.
- Recognise the existence of bias and distortion in historical text.
- Consider usefulness of sources using Nature, Origin and Purpose.
- Accept that people's attitudes change through time and that many factors can cause these changes.
- Understand the background to the Slave Trade and have a full appreciation of the conditions endured by enslaved Africans and empathise with their privations and distress.
- Understand what is meant by the 'triangle' of the Slave Trade and identify key countries involved in this trade. To also be able to describe and fully explain the economic reasons for the trade triangle.
- Be able to examine the usefulness of sources using Nature, Origin and Purpose and cross-referencing.
- Able to fully recognise the existence of bias and distortion in historical text.
- Able to understand how a nation and individual people's attitudes can change through time and what political, social and economic factors will influence those changes.
