Roger Jones And Dafydd Wigley Appointed As Members Of S4C Authority

The Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell announced today that Roger Jones and Dafydd Wigley have been appointed as Members of the Board of the Sianel Pedwar Cymru (S4C) Authority.

 

Their terms of appointment are from 24 November 2003 until 23 November 2007.
 
Biographical Notes

Roger Jones OBE became Chairman of the Welsh Development Agency in January 2002. He was previously BBC National Governor for Wales (1997-2002) and following a career with the Welcome Foundation he founded and Chaired Penn Pharmaceuticals which he sold in 1999. Amongst many other positions he is Chair of: the South Gwent Children's Foundation Appeal, the Industrial Trust for Wales, the Christ College Foundation, the Entrepreneurship Action Plan and the Welsh Language and Cultural Centre, Nantgwrtheyrn. He has not undertaken any political activity in the last five years.


Rt Hon Dafydd Wigley was until recently Assembly Member for Caernarfon at the National Assembly for Wales and was also Chair of the Audit Committee and Member of the Culture Committee. Until 2001, he was for 27 years, MP for Caernarfon and has been a Privy Council Member since 1997. Other positions include President of Plaid Cymru and Vice Chair of the All Party Disablement Group at the House of Commons from 1992-2001. Before this he held senior positions as Chief Cost Accountant at Mars Ltd and Financial Controller at Hoover Ltd. 

Notes to Editors

1. S4C (Sianel Pedwar Cymru - the Welsh Fourth Channel) was established to provide a wide-ranging and high quality television service in Welsh. The S4C Authority, as a regulatory body, is responsible for ensuring that S4C and S4C Digital are delivered as public services and also that effective management arrangements, including financial management, are in place for S4C's public and commercial services.

2. S4C is funded by Grant-in-aid, the level of which is determined by a formula set out in the Broadcasting Act 1996. S4C's Grant-in-aid for the calendar year 2002 was £81.5 million.
 
3. The current remuneration for Members of S4C is £8,700 per annum for a nominal 1 day per week.
