Planning and Compulsory Purchase Act 2004

The Act received Royal Assent on 13 May 2004 and the provisions of the Act were introduced through a series of Commencement Orders and Regulations. These are available from external links on the right of this page.

The Act strengthened the focus on sustainability, transparency, flexibility and speed.

The aim of the Act is to give effect to the Government's policy on the reform of the planning system, the principal features of which are set out in the policy statement Sustainable communities: Delivering through planning which was published on 23 July 2002. That paper took forward proposals that were outlined in the Green Paper Planning: delivering a fundamental change, published on 12 December 2001.
