Approved Documents and Building Regulations publications

Practical guidance on ways to comply with the functional requirements in the Building Regulations is outlined in a series of 'Approved Documents' published by Communities and Local Government.

Each document contains:

  • general guidance on the performance expected of materials and building work in order to comply with each of the requirements of the Building Regulations; and
  • practical examples and solutions on how to achieve compliance for some of the more common building situations.

Each year, Communities and Local Government commissions a number of research projects to underpin the development and maintenance of the Building Regulations. Publications related to these research projects can be found on the Buildings Regulations Research web page.
