Quinquennial Review of the Council for the Central Laboratory of the Research Councils (CCLRC)

The outcome of the quinquennial review of the CCLRC was announced on 26 February 2001 and the stage 1 report published.

The principal recommendation was that the relationship of the Research Councils and CCLRC as customer and supplier had proved to be sub-optimal and should be changed to a Strategic Ownership model in which CCLRC was brought under the joint ownership of the grant awarding Research Councils.

Stage 2 of the review examined the issues associated with the implementation of that model, but concluded that the CCLRC should remain a Research Council, take on new strategic and advisory responsibilities, and receive direct funding from the OSI. The Government accepted the review's recommendations.
