Market Data

BIS (then BERR) commissioned Innovas/K-matrix to undertake a market assessment of the size of the UK low carbon and environmental goods and services (LCEGS) sector in 2008. The original report, the 2008/09 update by Innovas/K-Matrix and subsequent updates of the data by K-Matrix are listed below.

The publication of the data is part of the coalition’s commitment to set data free by publishing it in a convenient format to enable business and non-profit organisations to use it easily and at minimal cost.

In 2010/11 the global low-carbon and environmental goods and services (LCEGS) sector was estimated to be worth around £3.3 trillion, after growing around 3.7% from 2009/10. The UK is currently the 6th in the world in this sector, with an estimated value of over to £122 billion (approximately 3.7% of the global market). The UK sector employed an estimated 939,600 people in 2010/11, and the market experienced growth of 4.7% from 2009/10.
