Biography

Adrian Smith was appointed Director General, Knowledge and Innovation in December 2010. Prior to this he had been Director General, Science and Research, since September 2008.

Previously he spent 10 years as Principal of Queen Mary, University of London. Before that he held posts at Imperial College including Professor of Statistics and Head of the Department of Mathematics.

Adrian has recently been the Treasurer of Universities UK and Deputy Chair of the UK Statistics Authority. From 1977 to 1990 he was Professor of Statistics and Head of Department of Mathematics at Nottingham University. He has also held posts at the University of Oxford and University College, London.

He has previously advised the Office for National Statistics, Department of the Environment, Nuclear Waste Inspectorate and Ministry of Defence.

Adrian Smith is a past President of the Royal Statistical Society and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 2001 in recognition of his contribution to statistics.
