Small businesses make up the majority of companies in the food industry, from production through to retail and catering.
As food safety is of paramount importance, legislators need to maintain high standards, while being aware that most of the businesses needing to comply with the regulation will be small. The Food Standards Agency has been proactive in ensuring that legislation is designed with the needs of small business in mind from the early stages.
In 2004 the European Union introduced a new requirement for all food businesses to have documented food safety management procedures in place.
To make compliance easier for small food businesses, the Food Standards Agency was actively involved in drafting the European legislation and subsequently launched a food safety management initiative for all sectors of the food industry.
‘Safer food, better business’ provides a practical approach to food safety management and comes in a number of different packs designed to meet the specific needs of different businesses, including small catering companies, small retail businesses, restaurants and takeaways. The packs are accompanied by a DVD guide, available in 16 different languages, produced to help businesses implement the initiative and train their staff.
