Towards a Nuclear National Policy Statement: Consultation on the Strategic Siting Assessment Process and Siting Criteria for New Nuclear Power Stations in the UK

Starting Date: 22-07-08

Closing Date: 11-11-08

In the White Paper on Nuclear Power, published in January 2008, the Government confirmed that it would carry out a Strategic Siting Assessment (SSA) to identify and assess the sites which are suitable for deployment of new nuclear power stations by 2025. This document consulted on the criteria and the process for the SSA.
Alongside this, the Government sought views on a study (including appendices) of the environmental and sustainability effects of siting new nuclear power stations in accordance with the criteria. The Government also published a Habitats Regulations Assessment Screening Report.

The Government response to the consultations on the strategic siting assessment process and siting criteria for new nuclear power stations in the UK ; and applying the proposed strategic siting assessment criteria : a study of the potential environmental and sustainability effects is available below.

This sets out the final process and criteria to the SSA and responds to comments made on the environmental study. In conjunction with this document, the Government has also published an update of the assessment of the environmental and sustainability effects to reflect changes to the SSA criteria made in response to the consultation.

The Government response also includes guidance and a nomination form for nominators. These are available as separate documents and the nomination form is also available separately in word format below.

We have also produced a leaflet: ‘Have your say: New Nuclear Power stations: how sites will be chosen and how you can have your say’ available from the Nuclear Power Siting Website.

Individual response to this consultation are contained in the .zip files below.
