Open data is a fantastic policy. It shows transparency in the government, as well as allowing us to hold the government to account, as we can see exactly where resources are being used, what value we are getting for our money, as well as allowing us to make more informed decisions, for example with hospital statistics, or council spending data - why am I paying for leather sofa's and 24 hour catering for my local council, for example? If only the establishment knows about this, these sorts of problems will never be solved.
It also allows the public to use the data for the common good, allowing schools to be compared for example, or even finding out which road is the best to park on, as you have the least chance of getting a ticket! :D
