A (Royal Wiltshire Yeomanry) Squadron, RY
A (Royal Wiltshire Yeomanry) Squadron is based in Swindon and recruit from across Wiltshire and neighbouring counties.
The unit has long maintained the true ‘family’ atmosphere typified by a county regiment. Our officers and soldiers are drawn from all walks of life in the towns and villages of Wiltshire - and even further afield.
Our soldiers are trained in light reconnaissance skills, including mounted and dismounted patrolling, covert observation posts (OPs), and urban operations.
Furthermore, the Squadron is one of the few specialist units in the Army trained to counter the threat from Weapons of Mass Destruction, and our soldiers are skilled and equipped to use specialist equipment for detecting chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear agents.
As a Royal Armoured Corps unit, we make vehicle skills an integral part of our training – whether it be acquiring your first driving licence, learning to drive off-road, heavy goods vehicle conversion, or even tracked vehicles.
The Squadron has a long and illustrious history which is kept alive by the current generation of serving members. In 2003, the Squadron was mobilised for the war in Iraq, and along with members of W (Westminster Dragoons) Squadron served as a formed unit under our own command, earning the respect of our regular counterparts and Allies alike.
It is difficult to find words to describe the friendships and bonds that are formed during times of adversity and triumph, on operations and in training. The only real way to understand the rewards of life as a Yeoman is to listen to the stories of those who have experienced it … so we invite you to read on, and take the challenge!
