Communications & Information Systems Wing
(CIS Wing)

RE Signals FlagsThe Royal Engineers Communications & Information Systems Wing (CIS Wing) based in Surrey has been established for many years.  The wing is housed in Burgoyne Block Gibraltar Barracks.  The building is named after Field Marshall Sir John Fox Burgoyne (late RE) who was responsible for laying the foundations for the first Royal Engineers Signals Wing (original name) in Chatham Kent in 1869.  The CIS Wing is responsible for all communications training within the Corps of Royal Engineers.

The CIS Wing has a staff of 21 military instructors and 4 civilians who provide instruction for 15 different courses ranging from the RE Troop Commanders course to the ME Cbt 0-3 course.

Military Engineers (ME) Command, Control & Communications
Systems (C3S) can gain recognised civilian qualifications at the CIS Wing. 

On the Class 3 C3S course students can gain the NVQ Level 2 Communications Technologies Practitioner and ECDL modular qualifications plus Modern Apprenticeships.  On the Class 1 C3S course students can gain the NVQ level 3 Communications Technologies Professional and the full European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL) qualification.

future3The Army has entered the digitised era and the CIS Wing are at the forefront delivering training to both vocational communicators and non vocational operators throughout the Corps.  Vocational courses delivered range from a 10 week Class 3 course to a 5 week QMSI course. Non vocational courses, range from 1 day at the Class 3 ME Cbt Engr level to a 10 day course for Class 1 Tradesman (includes all ME Cbt Engr 2-1 ).

Instruction covers radios and equipment from the BOWMAN suite, ComBAT (Common Battlefield Application Toolset), voice procedure, codes, antenna propagation, batteries & charging and Telephone and Line.  The Wing is equipped with 6 specialist Computer Assisted Instruction (CAI) classrooms and 13 bespoke Landrover simulators (LBTA) situated indoors.
