The Royal Artillery Parachute Display Team

A Two Stack Canopy Formation Been Flown At An Altitude Of 2'000ft With The Royal Artillery Flag.

The Team was formed in 1977 after the amalgamation of Independent teams, 29 Commando Regiment, who were nicknamed "The Buccaneers" and 7 Parachute Regiment Royal Horse Artillery, who were "The Black Knights". They were then relocated to Woolwich where the team stayed until unforeseen circumstances enforced the closure of the team in 1995, although still remaining registered with the British Parachuting Association throughout.

The team re-formed into their full time display role in 1998. Since then they have completed in numerous displays around the country using their parachuting skills to Recruit and KAPE (Keeping the Army in the Public Eye). In 2001, the use of their historic name "The Black Knights" came into effect. Each member has to have completed at least 200 parachute descents, met the requirements set out by the British Parachute Association and the Army Parachute Association before participating in a public display.

To date, there are 8 full time team members who are regular serving soldiers. The part time team members continue with their Regimental duties, which could take them any where in the world at short notice but the full time members can be called back to Operational duties by their Regiment at any given time. The team is currently based at The Royal School of Artillery, Larkhill and they operate out of Netheravon Airfield Camp.

During the winter months team members will maintain their parachuting skills by attending an intensive training camp in preparation for the forthcoming season. These training camps allow the selection of new team members, and the re-qualification of current members. They also allow non parachutists from throughout the Royal Artillery to be trained in order to provide team members for the future.
