Since the end of the 2007 Show Season the Royal Artillery Motorcycle Display Team, “The Flying Gunners” after a period of well earned leave, have been extremely busy preparing for the next show season of 2008.
The end of the year saw the departure of six team members who have either left the army to pursue other ventures or have returned to their parent Royal Artillery Regiments in order to return to regimental duties and in many cases operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. So this year we were looking for new team members to fill these vacancies. This started with two periods of “Team Trials” held in November and December of 2007 on a very cold Longmoor Training Area. See the gallery below for some off road action. This period also allowed the existing team members to get some off road training to!
From these trials we found four new team members, also the New Year saw the arrival of another three members who were unable to come on team trials. With two of those members being from the Territorial Army for the first time in flying gunner history. The TA members had come to visit us for a day and expressed an interest in joining the team, a week later they were joining us for Team Training again in Longmoor Training Camp.
Team Training went very well with all of the new team members integrating well with the existing team members and proving to be a dab hand at all the individual balancing acts that we show at our displays. The rest of the team had changed round a bit to with three new riders making the main 8 man ride this year performing the high speed cross over’s both on the ground and over ramps.
With the show season fast approaching we completed team training at Longmoor which was carried out on tarmac and headed back to our base at Larkhill in Wiltshire to complete the display but this time taking off the road tyres and replacing them with off road motocross tyres for the grass conversion, as many off our performances are performed at show grounds around the UK on grass!
Although the weather has been against us what with snow etc in April!! We are fully prepared and looking forward to another successful year at show grounds up and down the country. Check out our show list as we could be at a show near you!! Again we would also like to thank our supporters for their continued support and hope it may continue on.
