Soldier Rates of Pay 2006
The basic annual rates of pay for servicemen and women, new entrants and trained soldiers for the lower band rates are shown below and at. There is no difference in the rates payable to servicewomen.

Additions to pay
Specialist pay. Certain specialists (e.g parachutists) receive additional special pay, currently £4.85p per day. (which is equal to £33.95 per 7 day week, £150.35 per 31 day month or £1770.25p per year.)
Deductions from pay
New Entrants. All new entrants are required to pay for food and accommodation provided by the Army. The weekly charges are £9.80 for accommodation and £24.85 for food.
Adult single soldiers. A single Corporal or below living in barracks will be charged £12.25 for his or her accommodation and £24.85 for food per week. Single Sergeants and above living in barracks are charged £21.91 per week for accommodation, and £24.85 for food. For married unaccompanied personnel the weekly food charge is £18.20.
Married Soldiers. The weekly accommodation charges for a furnished Army house are:
1- bedroomed house £35.14.
2- bedroomed house £46.55
3- bedroomed house £53.34
Married soldiers in service family accommodation are also responsible for their own heating, lighting, electricity and gas costs.
Field Conditions. Charges for food and accommodation are waived when field conditions are declared, i.e. when on exercise out of barracks
Statutory Charges. Soldiers, in the same way as civilians, have to pay income tax and national insurance contributions, which are deducted from their gross pay at source.
Council tax. All personnel not living in service accommodation are responsible for paying their Council tax in accordance with current legislation. For those living in service accommodation, a contribution towards Council Tax is charged at apporximateley 42p per week.
Additions to pay
Specialist pay. Certain specialists (e.g parachutists) receive special pay currently (£4.85p per day). Personnel permanently stationed in Northern Ireland receive a resident supplement currenlty worht £5.60p per day.
Allowances. Certain allowances are also payable. For example, a local overseas allowance is payable to offset the extra costs of living overseas. Similarly, both single and married personnel who have completed one year's service might be eligable for a separation allowance when serving away from their duty stations for periods of 10 days or more.
Pensions
All soldiers who are in receipt of full-time pay are members of the non-contributory Armed Forces Pension Scheme 05. Soldiers are eligable for Early Departure payments and tax-free lump sum after completing 18 years service/40 years of age whichever is the later. Those leaving the Army before the 18 year service/40 years of age point will be eligable for a preserved pension and tax-free lump sum payable at the age of 65 providing they have served 2 years.
