Hal meets Gurkha Company
|
Garrison Radio Morning Jock Hal Stewart was once again on hand this time to witness his first Gurkha Company Passing Out Parade. In the presence of Lieutenant General Sir PCC Trousdell KBE CB the Colonel Commandant of the Brigade of Gurkhas the parade marked the beginning for many young proud recruits. Following their gruelling 39 week training programme this was a celebration of their outstanding achievements, one which Garrison Radio's Hal Stewart was only too happy to attend.
This year a record number of relatives arrived from Nepal to cheer on their heroic sons/husbands. |

Gurkha Garrison Radio on the air in Catterick & Aldershot
The Nepali language is on the airwaves nightly in two of the UK's largest garrisons. Each night a 30 minute round up of World News is broadcast at 8 pm on 1287AM. Garrison Radio's managing Director, Mark Page, said “We are pleased that the unique free service we offer is so warmly received by Gurkha soldiers and their families. We are serving not only our English speaking military audience, but around 750 Nepali speakers too and the programming, which we instigated from day one at Garrison Radio, is very popular. So we serve the second biggest Nepali speaking audience in the UK- a service we provide free to the British Army"
How Gurkha Garrison Radio broke new ground with "first" in Nepali broadcasting
The Army's UK radio network launched Gurkha Garrison Radio in 2001, a weekly show initially heard on 1287am- medium wave in Catterick Garrison and then in Colchester Garrison on 1350 am. This was also the first regular weekly broadcast of a radio show in Nepali on the internet, truly making it a World-Wide broadcast. By special arrangement we also bring you the latest world news in Nepali in a nightly 30-minute broadcast of the World Service news from the BBC. Garrison Radio brings this free service to Gurkha soldiers and their families wherever they may be around the globe.
