YO HO HO And a .....Cup of Tea?
Forget the pirate's traditional bottle of rum! Even two dastardly pirates like Liz and James had to sign the pledge in order to raise funds for SSAFA Forces Help, during their annual Big Brew Week.
With the valued help of local SSAFA representatives, the piratical pair served tea, coffee, cakes and biscuits outside the 107 Garrison FM studio in Homefield Road, Colchester, during the last hour or two of Liz's Breakfast Show - and raised £110 for the charity.
Thursday evening presenter, Lucy "Wives Club" Tedham, and her huge but soppy dog, Elvis, were also an attraction, while visitors from the Unit Welfare Offices, The Hive, the Army Primary Health Care Service and our civilian fanbase all turned up for a cuppa. Most of the cakes were generously donated by Marks & Spencer - so thanks to them too!
Comments Liz: "Ahoy there Webmates! Our James - now know as Jim Lad - made a hearty shipmate, and it was good to see to such generous landlubbers come aboard in aid of such a wonderful charity. I didn't even have the heart to make anyone walk the plank." |

Now That’s What We Call An Experience!
 |
Work experience students Sarah Drage and Luke Moon got more than they bargained for when they spent a week with Liz and James at 107 Garrison FM in Homefield Road.
Luke and Sarah learned editing and interviewing techniques, and how to “drive” Liz’s studio desk during her five-hour breakfast show, but there was more in store for the 15-year-old Philip Morant pupils.
At first they were nervous at the thought of recording a radio “promo” ad for the new revamped AWS facilities at the Colchester Station Youth Club, but after being led through a script and made to act it out, they soon lost their shyness.
|
|
The result was a lively promo, recorded “on location” at the club, on the first floor of the Community Centre in Fallowfield Road.
Says Liz: “Sarah and Luke were good company and picked everything up very quickly. They certainly discovered there is more to the world of radio than just sitting down playing great music!” |
Poles Apart?
| 107 Garrison FM’s breakfast presenter, Liz Mullen (left) has made sure that one of Colchester Garrison’s main public ‘gateways’ has a distinctive Army flavour.
Artist Richard Layzell, (right) has created an eye-catching installation on Layer Road, near the Lordswood Road junction, after a period of creative consultation with youngsters from nearby Montgomery Infants School.
All 14 Venetian gondola-style poles were originally due to be painted either blue and white – to remember Colchester United’s former football ground in Layer Road – or the colours of Venice’s own football club.
But during a series of regular updates with Richard on 107 Garrison FM, Liz suggested that there should be at least one pole decorated in Army ‘greens’.
Richard agreed, and designed two of the poles in the familiar camouflage colours.
|
 |
|
Schoolchildren, many of whom had deployed parents, visited the workshop where the poles were taking shape, to choose two scaled-down models for their school grounds.
Now they have a smaller version of one of “Liz’s poles” at their school along with a blue and white one!
At the official opening ceremony in Layer Road, Richard Layzell credited Liz with coming up with the Army ‘greens’ idea and said he had thoroughly appreciated 107 Garrison FM’s support throughout the project. |
What Fun at Wattisham
Liz and James and their 107 Garrison FM Roadshow were invited to Wattisham again, this time for the Air Assault Battalion REME Families' Day, which was graced by blazing sunshine.
James kept the great Garrison FM music going all afternoon and still found time to hand out car stickers, while Liz grabbed a few sunny Sunday rays in between compering events and auctioning off prizes.
With glider rides, woodland drives in a BV, a dunk the soldier competition (very welcome in the heat), a crocodile train, family races and lots more, this was a great day out for 7 Bn families in the beautiful Suffolk countryside.

CELEBRITY (?) MASTER(?) CHEF!!
They say if you can't stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen, but Liz was up for the challenge when she was invited to help the chef of a Colchester restaurant cook up some special treats for a charity night.
Little Haven's Children's Hospice was the beneficiary and the evening was hosted by Patrick Benoit (right) at his restaurant Gastro 1603 in the historic Old Siege House, Colchester.
Liz was persuaded to try out her kitchen skills with Geoff The Chef (centre). |
 |
Says Liz: "I'm glad my breakfast show is less frantic than this! Geoff and his team showed me that preparation is the key - but even so there was a real rush when the orders started coming in thick and fast. I don't know how they stay so calm!"
So did Liz thrill the diners with a signature dish?
"Er,no, luckily I was only allowed to finish off Geoff's creations, admits Liz, "It was basically a case of sprinkling and drizzling."

Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow?
107 Garrison FM's Liz Mullen gives a farewell pat to a couple of fine heads of hair- before they faced the chop for chairty.
The heads belong to Donna Ewing (Left) and Louise Lucus (Right.) Donna is CPU supervisor and Louise is a Head (sorry) Chef.
The Ladies Decided to have their locks chopped to a number two in aid of the British Heart Foundation and three charities supported by their employers, Sodexo.
Before they did so, they dropped in to the studio in Homefield Road, for an On-Air interview during Liz' s Breakfast show.
Donna and Louise admiited they'd been looking for wigs for social occasions until their hair starts to grow back - or their partners wouldn't be taking them out in public for weeks. |

We Love Lucy!
 |
Here's our lovely new Thursday night volunteer DJ, Lucy Tedham, with her faithful, soppy hound, Elvis!
Lucy, 24, is the wife of one of our deployed soldiers, Lance Corporal James Tedham of 3 Para (but currently attached to 2 Para out in Helmand Province).
107 Garrison FM's Liz Mullen decided to search for an Army wife or partner who'd be prepared to train as radio DJ and present a two-hour show aimed at other Garrison wives and families. A tall order for a complete beginner, but Lucy arrived, full of enthusiasm and begging for a chance.
|
|
Her first 6-8pm show was on May 1st and each week Lucy grows in confidence and ability, so please give her a listen, even if you're NOT married to a soldier! Everyone is welcome to enjoy Lucy's mix of great music and information and to enter her competitions. The rumba pants, in particular, have been a frilly favourite prize so far!
And each Thursday from 6-8pm we can truly say: "Elvis is in the building." Lucy's constant companion (a labradoodle with bits of collie) lies down patiently just inside the studio door, keeping one careful eye on the outside world and listening to the music.
The Wives' Club - for Army wives, partners and everyone who loves Lucy!
