HQ 52 Infantry Brigade is based in EdinburghCastle and commands Regular Army units from all over the UK. 52 Infantry Brigade is a relatively new formation, created on 1 April 2002, but has a long associated history. Its previous incarnations have been as 52 Lowland Division until 1968 and as 52 (Lowland) Brigade until recently.
The Brigade is about to undertake another reincarnation, to a deployable headquarters, taking on roles overseas for the first time since WW2.
In 1968 the Divisional Headquarters was reduced to Brigade level and has been based in Hamilton, Glasgow and now EdinburghCastle. The Brigade is currently commanded by Brigadier A D Mackay OBE. He is the commander of the Edinburgh Castle Garrison and is also responsible for the security of the Key to the Castle.
The Brigade consists of the HQ and five regular infantry battalions; 1st Battalion The Rifles Catterick Garrison. 3rd Battalion The Rifles based at Redford Barracks, Edinburgh. 2nd Battalion The Royal Ghurkha Rifles, based at the John Moore Barracks, Shornecliffe, 2nd Battalion Royal Regiment of Scotland (Royal Highland Fussiliers) which are barracked at Glencorse near Penicuik, and 2nd Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment (The Green Howards) presently at Beachley Barracks, Chepstow.
2006 was a very busy period for the Brigade, with units deploying to Iraq, Afghanisatan, Lebanon and Kenya, as well as many training exercises in England & Scotland.
