Semper vigilantes: 269 (West Riding) Battery

Based at Old Carlton Barracks in Leeds, 269 Battery are the only Gunner volunteers in Yorkshire.

The West Riding Artillery are a Surveillance and Target Acquisition battery of 101st (Northumbrian) Regiment RA(V).  In this role they act in support of 5th Regiment RA, based in Marne Barracks, Catterick, but with a battery perpetually on operations since 2003. 

Since 2004 Yorkshire's Gunners have been mobilised in three tranches of Operation TELIC (UK military operations in Iraq) and five members of the Battery have recently returned from Basrah, having served on Op TELIC IX with P Battery (The Dragon Troop) RA.  Soldiers from 269 Bty will deploy to Afghanistan on Operation HERRICK with elements of 5 Regt RA in the near future.

Not only will you be doing a worthwhile and exciting job in your spare time, the TA also give you the confidence to cope with difficult conditions and unexpected situations.  Some of the skills you learn may help you in your civilian job and test the depths in your mental and physical capabilities. 

SOCIAL

We like to think that we work hard and play hard.  There is the opportunity after each evening or weekend to meet your friends and talk over recent exploits.  The Battery also holds a number of social events where your partners are welcome.

PAY

We get paid for training at similar rates to the Regular Army.  Promotion and trade qualifications increase the daily rate.  Travel to and from the TA centre is refunded and tax-free.  Successful completion of annual training requirements entitles you to a tax-free bounty, which increases with length of service.

TA soldiers attend 15 day annual camps as part of their commitment and these sometimes take place overseas.  Recently 269 Battery held annual camps in Cyprus, Malta, Gibraltar and Lithuania.

In addition a number of members of the battery have chosen to serve in support of regular units on operations in the Former Yugoslavia and Cyprus, and on exercise in Canada, Norway and Oman.  Several of our soldiers were mobilised for Op TELIC.
