Will I be liable for Operational Deployment if I join?
After you have completed your basic training you will be qualified to conduct Operations, and you can be called up in support of the Regular Army. However, there are rules governing your eligibility and your own preferences are taken into account in all circumstances. The Reserve Forces Act 1996 is the authoritative document, and requires your employer to keep you job open for you while you are away. In addition, there is an Appeals procedure for Reservists and Employers in special circumstances. For more information, please visit the SaBRE web site.
How much of my time will I have to give up?
As a general rule, one weekend in four and an annual Camp of 15 days' duration is the level of commitment, although there may be additional time required in the initial stages while you are trained.
How fit will I have to be?
As a general idea, you must be able to run 3 miles without stopping and do sit-ups and press-ups afterwards.
