Yemen faces critical period to cement political settlement – UN envoy
Protesters in the Yemeni capital, Sana’a. The country has been rocked by political unrest this year as the so-called Arab Spring movement swept the Middle East and North Africa. IRIN
Anti-Government protesters. After months of violent clashes, warring factions signed a transitional agreement last month.
A street in Sana’a. A new Government of National Unity was formed on 10 December and presidential elections are due to be held on 21 February 2012. IRIN
Speaking to reporters, UN Special Adviser on Yemen, Jamal Benomar, said the next few weeks will be critical as Yemen seeks to address its political, security and humanitarian challenges.
