No goats no glory - UK music independents take it to LA, Clooney and the world

Dundee indie-rockers The Law, who released their debut album last month and initially formed "to write and play songs as a means of venting frustration at girlfriends and bosses", are to have their song featured in the trailer for forthcoming George Clooney movie "The Men Who Stare At Goats".

Out this winter, the movie stars Clooney alongside Ewan McGregor, Jeff Bridges, Kevin Spacey and several goats. The Law’s track "Don’t Stop, Believe" is set to play a major part in the film’s international marketing campaign.

The song was first brought to the attention of influential music supervisors during April’s BPI/UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) Los Angeles Sync Mission – where UK music companies met heavy-hitting music licensing consultants, and music supervisors from film, TV, computer gaming and advertising. Sync licensing (screen and gaming placements) globally was worth £21million last year to UK music companies. High-fliers Muse enjoyed a boost to their popularity when their music was featured in the Twilight films.

Dougie Souness of No Half Measures manages The Law. He explained:

"Doing business in LA is crucial for music companies like us. It's the place where you have the vast majority of key people and decision makers in the sync market all working in close proximity to each other."

"Being based in Glasgow, I can't expect these people to line up outside my front door, which is why being able to participate in activity such as the recent BPI/UKTI Sync Mission is important to us. We’ve been following up on a number of leads since the mission and we’re absolutely delighted to have procured this great opportunity for The Law."

The numerous successes from the BPI/UKTI Sync Mission include placements in CSI:NY for King Roc; 90210 for Natacha Atlas; and also for Nitin Sawhney in the "Men Who Stare At Goats" trailer.

Julian Wall of music trade body and Sync Mission co-organiser BPI added:

"UK music is popular worldwide and nowhere more so than in the US. It has a reputation for being on the cutting edge, driven by healthy output from independents and the grass roots. The film, TV, games and entertainment industry in Los Angeles wants music that will still sound fresh when a film or game is completed and released to consumers. They like to use UK music and the UKTI/BPI trade mission exists to support UK companies in responding to this."

The Law front man Stuart Purvey said:

"We’re totally stoked that the song’s thought of so highly. "Don’t stop, believe" is our motto. It’s how we like to live our day to day lives. The song’s about keep on keeping on, and never giving up."

About "The Law"

Hailing from Dundee, The Law formed initially to write and play songs as a means of venting frustration at girlfriends and bosses, resulting in swaggeringly confident tunes with sing-along choruses, classy guitar licks and sublime melodies. Consisting of Stuart Purvey (vocals), Stevie Anderson (guitar), brothers Martin Donald (drums), and Simon Donald (bass), the band are firm favourites amongst a city finding itself buoyant with rock’n’roll belief and desire.

Their debut album "A Measure of Wealth" (released September 28, 2009) is out now through the bands own label Local Boy Records (distributed by Absolute/Arvato). The first two singles taken from the album - "Don’t Stop, Believe" (released 20 July 2009) and "The Chase" (released 14 September 2009) – gained wide spread support in the press and airplay from the likes of BBC Radio 1, BBC 6 Music, XFM, Clyde, Tay, Northsound, Forth etc. A third single – "Television Satellite" will be released on 09 November 2009, and The Law are on tour throughout October, November, and December 2009. www.TheLawMusic.com
