Skillfast-UK is the Sector Skills Council (SSC) for Apparel, Footwear, Textiles and Related Businesses. Skillfast-UK is an employer led body, licensed to represent the sector’s views on skills at the highest level. It works with employers, government and key partners and stakeholders across the UK to identify the skills required to sustain and improve productivity and competitiveness.
There is an estimated 384,000 people employed in the Skillfast-UK footprint across the UK currently, generating a total of around £9.9bn GDP (2006), dominated by small and medium sized employers, with more than 80% of establishments having 10 or less employees.
Large employers (establishments with 200+ employees) are very few in number, but vitally important, as they account for around one fifth of the people employed in the sector.
This Sector Qualifications Strategy (SQS) has been devised by Skillfast-UK and sector employers with the support of UK regulatory bodies to ensure the sector qualifications meet the needs of the sector and sub-sectors across all four countries of the UK, including those who aspire to and currently work within the sector.
