Sector Qualifications Strategy - Lantra

Continued...
The Sector Qualification Strategy (SQS) is a UK-wide strategic document that sets out how the current and future skills needs of the environmental and land-based sector will be met through the reform of qualifications and training, taking account of the market pressure and drivers of change as identified in the SSA. The Sector Qualification Strategy provides a rationale and framework for the recognition of skills, learning and professional development for the sector.
The environmental and land-based sector is complex and diverse, covering 17 industries distributed across the UK and employing some one million people, or 3.4% of the total employment in the UK. There are approximately 210,000 businesses within Lantra’s footprint, over 92% of which employ fewer than five people and two thirds of which are sole traders. Lantra also represents the interests of 500,000 volunteers and an estimated 340,000 non-UK nationals1 across the sector. A recent estimate has put the footprint’s contribution to national GDP at 5.67%.
The Sector Skills Agreement (SSA) identifies a number of qualifications and training issues which affect the environmental and land-based sector and a number of priorities that need to be addressed so that provision for workforce development is:
- Delivered more flexibly
- Delivered in smaller components, or bite-sized units
- Relevant to the needs of industry
- Subsidised and available to all ages
- Recognised whether it is accredited or non-accredited
- Have clear progression routes and career maps.
This document provides an overview of the sector, its drivers for business and sustainability and sets out how learning and skills development will need to be developed to meet the broad and diverse needs of individuals and businesses in the environmental and land-based industries.
