GoSkills' Sector Skills Agreement (SSA) has provided the detail of the skills needs of the sector. The Sector Qualification Strategy builds on the research carried out via the SSA. It provides a specific focus on the formal qualifications and alternative options for recognition of skills that are currently in place and that will be needed in the future.

The passenger transport sector is diverse and each of the industries within it has different needs. The sector is heavily regulated with requirements for continuous re-assessment of competence, particularly in relation to safety-related practices. As a customer facing sector, there is also a high level of commitment to developing individuals' skills in working with customers.

GoSkills is the Sector Skills Council for Passenger Transport. The passenger transport sector covers the following industries: airlines, airports, ground handlers, bus, coach, hackney, private hire, chauffeur, community transport, rail, light rail, driver training (for road vehicles) and transport planning. There is a range of types of employment situation from the self employed/owner manager through small and medium sized enterprises to large employers.
