Nigel Meager

Nigel MeagerNigel is Director of the Institute for Employment Studies.  His research interests are focused on employment but within this they are wide ranging.  He therefore offers an unusual breadth of knowledge and experience of research into employment issues.  For instance he has conducted evaluations of active labour market policies and welfare to work and researched disadvantage in the labour market, in particular relating to disabled people. His expertise also covers, national, regional and local labour markets, unemployment, skill shortages, small business and self employment, equal opportunities and patterns of work.

The depth of Nigel's knowledge and experience has been acknowledged many times by others and reflected in the number and type of advisory roles he has held in the UK and also internationally.  He has advised House of Commons select committees on several occasions. He represented the UK on the European Commission's expert group on employment of disabled people, and has been the UK representative on the European Commission's Employment Observatory. He helped to co-ordinate the European Commission's programme identifying transferable good practice in employment policy, and is currently co-ordinating the European Peer Review programme in social inclusion and social protection. He is chair of the Association of Research Centres in the Social Sciences (ARCISS).  He remains an advisor to BIS on employment policies.
