Commissioner Visit to SSC and SSC Relicensing Panel

The UK Commission is led by Commissioners drawn from the highest levels of the private, public and voluntary sectors. Through the SSC Committee, they provide leadership, advice and support to UKCES officials on developing and implementing the approach to the relicensing programme, including; playing an active role in the development of the relicensing framework and Prospectus, conducting visits to the SSCs and sitting on the SSC Relicensing Panel which ultimately gives advice to government as to whether an SSC should be relicensed.

Each SSC will be visited by a Commissioner to help ensure the relicensing recommendation is informed by a thorough understanding of the SSC through consideration of both the NAO report and the insights that the Commissioner gains on their visit. The visit also provides a useful opportunity for the SSC Board to have an in depth discussion with the Commission on the effectiveness and impact they are making.

Shortly after the visit, the SSC will be invited to the SSC Relicensing Panel meeting. There is one Panel meeting per tranche of SSCs. The Panel provides an opportunity for the SSC to make their case for relicensing to a wider group of Commissioners, drawn from the SSC Committee at a meeting Charlie Mayfield (SSC Committee chair) hopes to chair personally. The Commissioner that undertakes the visit will sit on the associated SSC Relicensing Panel.

The Commissioners will then consider all the evidence (NAO report, outcomes of Commissioner Visit and Relicensing Panel) and make a recommendation on whether the SSC should be relicensed. The full Commission must ratify the recommendation, at which point Sir Mike Rake (Chair UKCES) will formally write to the Secretary of State.
