Workshop exploring international volunteering best practice
12 October 2011, 10am-4pm
Do you work for a volunteer sending organisation interested in improving practice and engaging with others about how this may be achieved? If so, this workshop is for you.
Participants will find out about our new Gap Year and International Volunteering Standard (GIVS), discuss key challenges and explore how these may be addressed.
Tourism Concern has developed GIVS because we believe it is vital for volunteer organisations to demonstrate responsibility in the way they recruit volunteers, find placements and manage the volunteering process.

Water Equity in Tourism campaign

Our new Water Equity in Tourism (WET) campaign calls for action to protect the water rights of communities in the face of increasing competition from the tourism industry.
The right to water constitutes one of the most fundamental human rights. Yet for communities in many countries, this right is being undermined in the name of tourism. Our WET campaign is demanding a critical debate around whether tourist’s water consumption should continue to have priority over the needs of local communities.
Global tourism in figures
- Global Tourism worth US$ 919 billion (2010)
- Tourism employs 8% of the global workforce
- 1.6 billion international tourists by 2020
Unregulated tourism development is continuing to devastate environments, degrade cultures and destroy traditional livelihoods.
