  • 20 Dec: New SIPRI report on arms flows to Africa

    States in sub-Saharan Africa have received major arms through legal transfers from a wide variety of countries worldwide. There is no hard evidence that there was widespread large illegal supplies from outside the region in 2006-10, but there have been regular instances of illegal weapons flows inside the region.   • 20 Dec: New SIPRI paper on military, health and education spending in Latin America

    Military spending in many Latin American states has risen rapidly, while poverty and inequality continue to plague the region. This new SIPRI Insights paper examines the question of whether military spending increases are coming at the cost of social spending, using various statistical tools. Download the report here.

  • New US claims on Myanmar nuclear programme back up SIPRI expert's findings

    US Senator Richard Lugar's new revelations about Myanmar's suspected nuclear ambitions support claims made more than a year ago by SIPRI Associated Senior Research Fellow and former International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director Robert Kelley. Kelley presented his latest findings concerning apparent attempts by the Myanmar military to start a rudimentary nuclear weapon programme at a public briefing at SIPRI last month.

Dissemination seminar in Zimbabwe: promoting the participation of women in peace, security and post-conflict transformation

This seminar will share the experiences and lessons learned by the WCoZ on promoting women’s participation in peace and security issues and to contribute to the analysis of the conflict in Zimbabwe and its implications for gender, peace and security. In addition, the seminar will introduce the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Gender Alliance—Peace and Security Cluster. Read more about the event here.

Dissemination seminar in Mali on the fight against terrorism

The seminar will include presentations by Dr Mariam D. Maiga, author of the study on the role of civil society in addressing the problem of terrorism in Mali, and Professor Boubacar N’Diaye of the College of Wooster, Ohio, USA, and the African Security Sector Network (ASSN). Databases

SIPRI Military Expenditure Database

The SIPRI Military Expenditure Database was updated on 3 June with SIPRI's latest data. The database provides a consistent time series on the military spending of 172 countries since 1988. Data are provided  by country in the following three formats:

  • in local currency, at current prices. 1988-2009
  • in US dollars, at constant (2008) prices and exchange rates, 1988-2009
  • as a share (%) of gross domestic product (GDP), 1988-2008
