Guidelines

notepadSentencing guidelines aid sentencers in the complex decision-making process involved in sentencing. Guidelines also help encourage consistency in sentencing, whilst maintaining the independence of the judiciary.

The Sentencing Council, set up on 6th April 2010, is the independent body charged by parliament to issue sentencing guidelines for courts in England and Wales. It replaces the Sentencing Advisory Panel and the Sentencing Guidelines Council.
