Deputy Commander in Chief Fleet, Vice Admiral Richard Ibbotson CB DSC today visited RFA Argus alongside in Portsmouth Naval Base, to meet the ship’s communications officers and ratings for the official renaming of the Communications branch of the RFA.

In order to reflect the important changes taking place in maritime information technology, the RFA Communications Branch has been renamed the Communication Information Systems (CIS) Branch. This name change better reflects the modern communication role in the 21st Century for the RFA.

New enhanced IT equipment is currently being installed on RFA ships to help ensure an integrated MOD wide communications system, which will support the information needs and applications to deliver compatibility throughout the MOD.

Vice Admiral Ibbotson said

“This represents the first of many steps towards a modern technology based communications infrastructure set for the 21st century”.

And he went on to say

“The new title clearly indicates the future direction of communications within the Royal Navy and Royal Fleet Auxiliary”
