So my time as SO3 Internet working within the Royal Navy Internet Team has finally drawn to an end. What have I learnt? Has it been productive and where has this holdover fitted into my long term career path?
Well, I have been working as SO3 Internet since mid August and the time certainly has flown by. I have been kept busy on a day to day basis helping to keep the Navy website fully updated as well as writing various publications for future members of the RN Internet Team. I have learnt about the importance of ensuring our website is kept up to date with the latest stories from the Fleet to keep members of the public interested and coming back to the site. I have also learned how vital the Internet is as a communication medium for the Royal Navy, ranging from potential recruits learning all about the RN to our families using the RN community website.
The short holdover period has been extremely varied and interesting at all stages, and it has been a good insight to how the Ministry of Defence here in London works. It is difficult to understand how the wider Navy works being embedded within the Fleet Air Arm and this has been an opportune time to broaden my horizons and learn about the Navy in a way not possible by doing a conventional hold within a FAA Squadron.
I now leave London and start my Basic Helicopter Training, beginning in Jan next year at RAF Shawbury. These are exciting times for my career and next year looks as though it’s going to be a fantastic experience and finally I will be able to start flying helos!
