Sir David Omand appointed to the Natural History Museum

The Prime Minister has today appointed Sir David Omand to the Board of the Natural History Museum for a period of four years.
Biographical Notes
Sir David Omand GCB retired in April 2005 after over 35 years in the UK Civil Service, notably as Director of Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ), Permanent Secretary of the Home Office, and most recently as Permanent Secretary in the Cabinet Office as the first UK Security and Intelligence Co-ordinator. He is now a Visiting Professor at King's College London. He lectures regularly on public services reform, and is completing a BSc in Mathematical Sciences with the Open University.
Sir David Omand holds no other public appointments and has not carried out any political activity in the last five years.

- The Museum was looking for a person with expertise in Government structures and processes
- The Natural History Museum houses over 68 million specimens of animals, plants, fossils, rocks and minerals. This national collection underpins the important research carried out by the Museum to benefit environmental, medical and agricultural sciences. It also includes the Zoological Museum at Tring.

- The posts are not remunerated. Reasonable expenses can be claimed.
- The appointments have been made in accordance with the OCPA Code of Practice. Appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process.
