Reduction in Notice to Move of UK Service Personnel
Published Wednesday, 14 November 2001 06:00

In the light of the fluid and rapidly changing situation in Afghanistan, the notice to move of elements of the UK Joint Rapid Reaction Force has been reduced.

No decisions have been taken to deploy UK forces.  Any such decisions would follow further consultations with the coalition.  Reducing the notice to move of these units is a sensible precautionary measure so that they are able to respond quickly if required.  Possible tasks might include assisting the United Nations and the humanitarian agencies.

The units concerned include elements from 3 Commando and 16 Air Assault Brigades, including 2nd Battalion, The Parachute Regiment, and 45 Commando Royal Marines, and a range of supporting assets including RAF air transport, support helicopters, engineers, logistic teams and explosive ordnance disposal experts.  There is no intention to deploy these forces in offensive operations against the Taliban.  40 Commando Royal Marines remain at a high state of readiness for contingency operations.
