First Minister for Wales the Rt Hon Rhodri Morgan had a traditional greeting for Welsh troops serving in Iraq during a St David's Day visit to personnel on tour to the Basrah region on 1 March 2005.

The Cardiff West Assembly Member handed out leeks to soldiers from the 1st Battalion Welsh Guards during a parade at Camp Abu Naji near Al Amarah before moving on by helicopter to visit troops from the Prince of Wales's Company based in the Shatt al Arab Hotel based in Basrah.

He then flew on to Shaibah Logistic Base in the south of Basrah to meet fellow countrymen from a variety of units including Royal Artillery soldiers from the former 22 Regiment Royal Artillery, nicknamed "The Welsh Gunner".

His whistle-stop tour ended where it began with a visit to Welsh RAF aircrew in the helicopter hangers at Basrah Air Station who were responsible for organising his visit around theatre.
