It is with deep regret that the Ministry of Defence can confirm the death of Marine Christopher R Maddison, 9 Assault Squadron Royal Marines, who was killed in action during fighting in the area of Basrah on 30 March. His next of kin have been informed. He was aged 24.

In a statement, his parents said:

"Christopher Maddison was loved and respected by everybody who knew him. He was a man of character, honour and principles who always fought for those less able. As he lived, he died, with strength and courage. He died in a war that will be won in his name alongside all the other brave souls who selflessly gave themselves for the freedom of all our nations. God bless him and all his brothers and sisters."
