SECURITY ASSISTANCE FORCE:
ROMANIAN MINISTRY OF NATIONAL DEFENCE ANNOUNCEMENT - 29 JANUARY
2002
The first
Romanian troops arrived in Kabul today. Twelve soldiers from
the 265th Military Police Battalion and a military liaison
officer have just arrived, a few hours ago, on the Kabul airport,
by a Romanian C-130 Hercules.
Mr. Sorin Encutescu, Secretary of State for Parliament Relationship,
Legislative Harmonization and Public Relations in the Ministry
of Defence, met the soldiers in the Otopeni Air Force Base
in Bucharest before their leaving. "This is an activity
through which we can prove our capability of participation
in such missions", he said.
The deployment
in Afghanistan is a part of the continued effort of the Romanian
Armed Forces to participate along Western democracies in international
missions, after Kuweit, Somalia, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Kosovo.
The deployment will continue the next days, until the completion
of the agreed contingent, according to the Romanian commitment
to the international anti-terrorist coalition.
