INTERNATIONAL
SECURITY ASSISTANCE FORCE:
ROMANIAN MINISTRY OF NATIONAL DEFENCE ANNOUNCEMENT - 17 JANUARY
2002
In compliance
with the Parliament approval, the Romanian Ministry of National
Defence is completing preparations this week to send several
military support elements to augment the International Security
Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan. Romanian soldiers
will assist in maintaining security in and around the capital
city of Kabul in order to allow the Interim Administration
of Afghanistan to carry out its many critical functions. By
deploying these troops with the ISAF, Romania continues to
demonstrate its unequivocal support of the international effort
to bring stability tothat troubled land. In doing so, Romania
becomes one of only two NATOaspirants to actively contribute
to the ISAF.
Romanian
support elements include a military police platoon from 265
Military Police Battalion, a C-130 Hercules transport aircraft
and crew, an aviation technical assistance team, as well as
three military liaison officers.
All Romanian
ISAF military personnel were especially selected from elite
military units based on their individual experience and achievement
while participating in peace support operations in the Balkans
and Africa. Other selection criteria included physical, medical
and psychological fitness as well as English language proficiency.
Particularly noteworthy is the fact that the military police
platoon is comprised solely of volunteers.
Romania's
contribution to the ISAF may be increased in time, based on
future military requirements in the theatre of operations.
