A major community project supported by the International Security Assistance Force was opened on 30 April 2002, when the Deputy Mayor of Kabul and Major-General McColl, commanding ISAF, led a ceremony to mark the renovation of Shar-e-Naw park and surrounding facilities. Work undertaken includes the repair of a cinema, greenhouse, cafe and a women's grieving hall. Public toilets have also been constructed, and a park fence erected.

The ceremony on 26 April began with readings from the Koran, followed by speeches from the Deputy Mayor and Major-General McColl, and the unveiling of commemorative plaques in Dari, Pashtun and English. Nineteen trees were then planted, each by a representative of a different ISAF contributing nation.
