The young woman in the wheelchair
suffered 45% burns when she fell into
a firepit used for the traditional baking
of bread in Afghanistan. Major Bailey,
an Army doctor serving with 40 Commando
Royal Marines, found her close to death in
a hospital in Bamian and arranged for her
transfer by British helicopter to a
specialist Italian hospital in Kabul. Her
mother and a physiotherapist from the
Italian hospital are also pictured
