The current performance indicators for GC(S)E awarding bodies

Since 2002, those awarding bodies offering GCSE and A level qualifications have been required to report to the qualifications regulators against eight performance indicators.  The performance indicators were designed to measure improvements in key areas of general qualifications examination system delivery.

  • Performance Indicator 1: Issue of results – reported as the percentage of results against entries issued to centres on the agreed publication date.
  • Performance Indicator 2: Enquiries about results – reported as the percentage of enquiries where the outcome is notified to centres within deadline.
  • Performance Indicator 3: Despatch of question papers – reported as the percentage of examination papers despatched in time to be received by centres at least one week before the timetabled date of the examination.
  • Performance Indicator 4: Errata – reported as
    a) The percentage of examination question papers issued without need of correction.
    b) Where examination question papers are found to be incorrect, the percentage where an erratum was issued before the day of the timetabled examination date.
  • Performance Indicator 5: Access to scripts – reported for GCE and VCE, the percentage of photocopies of scripts despatched in time to reach centres or private candidates no later than 10 days before the closing date for enquiries about results.
  • Performance Indicator 6: Appeals – reported as
    a) The percentage of cases where appellants are informed of the outcomes of formal appeals hearings within 50 working days of the lodging of the initial request.
    b) The percentage of appeals on summer examinations completed by 14 February the following year.
  • Performance Indicator 7: Responding to queries – reported as the percentage of queries and complaints from centres answered within 10 working days.
