Ofgem has committed to look at a range of future scenarios for electricity networks that could arise as a consequence of market and policy developments. For this reason we started the long-term electricity network scenarios (LENS) project.
The main objective of the project is to facilitate the development of a range of future electricity network scenarios for Great Britain for 2050. This will facilitate discussion between stakeholders on longer term electricity network development issues. Whilst assisting strategic thinking amongst stakeholders in industry and Government within various contexts, the project is not aimed at developing or prescribing particular investment strategies for electricity network companies.
Our initial open letter, published in June 2007, describes our proposed approach for the LENS project and invited views. The project will involve 3 phases:
- Phase 1 – Data collation.
- Phase 2 – Data appraisal and the synthesis of four or five scenarios for 2050, and “backcasting” these to 2025.
- Phase 3 – Analysis of scenarios and establishing a set of key issues for networks and the regulation of networks going forward.
Each phase will include a consultation and a stakeholder workshop. Following the June open letter, we held the first workshop in August 2007, notes of which are available on this page
Further information and documentation for the LENS project will be published on this page as the project progresses.
