Cancer will touch most of our lives at some point. One in three people in England will develop the disease and it will kill one in four.
In our new exclusive film, the Prime Minister, Tony Blair, outlines the changes hat are taking place in cancer care. This includes a new £37.5m bowel cancer screening programme – the first in England for both men and women.
You can find out more about how the government’s investment in cancer services is making a difference to people in the UK by watching these short films.
They cover the key areas of preventing cancer, screening for the disease, making a diagnosis, treating patients and caring for them. You can find out more on each issue in our cancer care factsheet.

Tackling Cancer by the Prime Minister
Tony Blair underlines the commitment to renew NHS cancer services in this new film.
National Cancer Director
In October 1999 Professor Mike Richards was appointed as the Government’s National Cancer Director.
In September 2000 he set out, for the first time, a national 10-year strategy to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer in the NHS Cancer Plan. Four years into this challenging and ambitious programme of work he remains committed and focussed on the job in hand.
Coping with Cancer
Diagnosis is always a shock. But treatment has radically improved. Today all cancer experts work together, use modern equipment and exercise the most thorough care. Survival and recovery rates are high and patients have new confidence in the service.
What’s New
From state-of-the-art diagnostic scanners to humble electronic pagers, the NHS Cancer Plan is pumping millions of pounds in new money for the latest ideas to treat patients quicker and better all over Britain.
Kicking the Habit
It is the killer addiction. Smoking causes the death of one in three cancer patients. The Government has launched a range of initiatives, local and national, to help people give up. This film shows how.
Working Together
It takes true teamwork to tackle cancer. Surgeons, radiographers nurses and others now adopt the most cooperative approach to benefit patients. We watch a multi-disciplinary course learning in action.
