Life Peerage

27 May 2002

The Queen has been graciously pleased to signify her intention of conferring a Peerage of the United Kingdom for Life upon the Most Reverend and Right Honourable George Leonard Carey on his retirement as Lord Archbishop of Canterbury.

Note for Editors

The Archbishop began his ordained ministry as curate of St Mary’s, Islington in 1962. In 1966 he became a lecturer at Oakhill Theological College then lecturer at St John’s Theological College, Nottingham. He was made Vicar of St Nicholas’ Church in Durham in 1975 and moved to become Principal of Trinity College, Stoke Hill, Bristol in 1982. He was consecrated Bishop of Bath and Wells in 1987 and became Archbishop of Canterbury in 1991.

This recommendation for a non party-political life peerage was made by the Prime Minister who decided last year, after consultation with the House of Lords Appointments Commission, to nominate, direct to The Queen, a limited number of holders of very high public office.
