Tony Blair has met with Angela Merkel for talks at Number 10, describing the relationship between Britain and Germany as ‘immensely important’
Mrs Merkel took over as Chancellor earlier this week from Gerhard Schroder.
The two leaders talked about trade and the EU budget, amongst other topics.
Mr Blair told journalists afterwards that the European Union with 25 members could only work if all the countries worked closely together on all issues, including financing.
The PM told Mrs Merkel:
“It is a tremendous responsibility that you have taken on and we look forward to working with you to make it a great success for you and your country and for the European Union.”
The UK has held the Presidency of the European Union for the second half of this year.
An important EU heads of state and government council meeting will be held in Brussels next month, chaired by the PM, where future financing will feature on the agenda.
