PM supports Darfur concert

21 October 2007

The Prime Minister has lent his support to a special concert being held in London today to raise awareness of the crisis in Darfur.

In a video message screened at tonight’s event, the PM thanked the artists and organisers and praised the "excellent work" of British organisations operating in the Darfur region. It is time for the international community to "redouble our efforts" to bring peace to the troubled region of Sudan, he said.

The PM said:

"The situation in Darfur is totally unacceptable. Over two million people have been forced from their homes. This year alone 250,000 more people have been displaced. Fighting has intensified in recent weeks, further undermining the fragile humanitarian situation.

"The fact that so many of you are here tonight shows how deeply people from communities all over Britain care about the people of Darfur and their plight. An injustice anywhere is an attack on justice everywhere and so we will continue working together with all of you to bring this suffering to an end."

The concert, sponsored by Islamic Relief and the FCO amongst others, is being held at Wembley arena and features a number of international artists.
