Predictive risk and health care: an overview

The NHS in England is about to embark on a substantial programme of reform made more challenging by ambitious efficiency targets and large cuts to management. Our latest policy response NHS reforms in England: managing the transition identifies ways to both minimise the risks associated with these changes as well as capitalise on the opportunities they present. At the same time, we have commissioned major surveys of the public and GPs to explore their views and attitudes towards the Government’s NHS reforms.
POPPs evaluation
Our latest research summary presents the findings of a project to evaluate eight community-based interventions that formed part of the Department of Health funded Partnership for Older People Projects (POPP) initiative. Using new data linkage techniques, our researchers were able to evaluate the impact that the selected set of POPP interventions had on the rates of emergency hospital admissions in their respective areas. Visit our dedicated project page for further information about our work in this area. Download the report.
Predictive risk
The Nuffield Trust has considerable experience in the application of predictive risk modelling techniques in the UK. These techniques are becoming increasingly important, with PCTs and emerging GP consortia expected to make greater use of such tools to stratify the health risk of the populations they serve. In our latest research summary, we review how predictive risk techniques are currently being used in the NHS, exploring some of the challenges involved in applying these techniques in practice, and examining some new developments.
Annual Summit
Our third Summit came at a critical time in the NHS reform agenda, and was used as a platform for health secretary Andrew Lansley to announce amendments to the Health and Social Care Bill clarifying the Government’s position on price competition. Read Senior Fellow Dr Rebecca Rosen’s blog which reflects on discussions held at the Summit, and check our website shortly for a comprehensive series of videos of keynote speakers, including ResPublica’s Phillip Blond and Dr Marshall Ganz of the John F. Kennedy School of Government.
Survey of GPs & public
We have commissioned major surveys of the public and GPs to explore their views on the Government’s NHS reforms. We asked Ipsos Mori to chart public opinion towards the NHS and possible future principles for its reform – read a summary of the findings, while the online community Doctors.net.uk conducted two surveys of their members – read a summary of the findings. The latter sheds more light on GPs’ expectations of how consortia will work and the support they believe they will need.
