We offer free academic inductions at The National Archives for groups of between 15 and 25 postgraduates. The sessions are around an hour long and involve a tour of the Research and Enquiries Room where we will cover:

  • an overview of the work of The National Archives, including document selection and retention
  • advice on research
  • how to access references
  • using the online catalogue
  • ordering documents

How to book

To book an induction, please email the events team at ARKEvents@nationalarchives.gov.uk.

Availability: Tuesday to Friday. Pre-booking required, minimum two months in advance.

Individuals

Students who are not coming as a member of a group can join another group's induction, if space allows. Contact us to find out more.

Specialist groups

For groups of 15 or more who specialise in a particular topic or period of history, we will make every effort to find a suitable speaker.

Viewing documents

If tutors wish to examine and discuss specific documents with their students, they can reserve the Visits Room in the Research and Enquiries Room, subject to availability. We can pre-order up to ten documents on your behalf - please give us at least five working days' notice.

Regional inductions

We can also hold inductions at your university or college. This may allow for a larger number of participants, depending on the accommodation. The sessions are available in term time and normally run between 14:00 and 16:00.

Regional inductions consist of:

  • a presentation on how to start research at The National Archives
  • an introduction to our specialist services for academic users
  • a demonstration of our online Catalogue
  • an introduction to some of the key archival websites, such as Access to Archives (A2A)
  • the opportunity to ask detailed questions.
